Amazon to Buy Medical for $3.9 Billion; The FTC is investigating Thu, 22 Sep 2022 23:27:24 +0000

In July 2022, Amazon announced that it had entered into a “definitive merger” to acquire One Medical, a primary care organization. According to first press release When the company announced its acquisition plans, it described One Medical as a “national, human-centered, technology-driven primary care organization.” Also a doctor provided an update in August that it had signed a deal with Amazon, assuring its current customers that the deal wouldn’t change anything for them.

Other sites explained that One Medical operates like the “Netflix” of healthcare, offering a $199 annual subscription plan that gives members access to 125 in-person or virtual clinics across the country. Amazon is getting into healthcare

Amazon has long sought a move into healthcare, and for good reason, as the healthcare market is valued at nearly $4 trillion. Amazon first attempted to enter the healthcare market by launching its own healthcare company, Amazon Care. Amazon officially announcement in August 2022 that it would drop plans to launch Amazon Care, which the company had planned to be a primary care model combining both telehealth and in-person services.

Despite the fact that Amazon Care had been in the works for three years and had already launched in all 50 states, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, Neil Lindsay, declared that Amazon Care would not be a long-term solution for its customers. The official closing date for Amazon Health through Amazon Care is December 31, 2022.

Now, it looks like Amazon has set its sights on One Medical instead, which already has a base established of 188 offices, 29 markets, more than 767,000 members and a relationship with 8,000 companies that offer the services to their employees. The company, while growing since its creation in 2007, has reported significant losses each year and said it has yet to make a profit, Amazon will also acquire One Medical’s debt as part of the deal.

Why the FTC is interested in Amazon

On September 5, reports distributed that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating Amazon’s plans to buy One Medical, as well as their plans to buy iRobot, also a billion-plus deal. The new tablets — Fire HD 8, Fire HD 8 Plus, Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro – will be available for pre-order today and start shipping in October. The $99 Fire 8 HD has a 30% faster hexa-core processor than its predecessor, comes with USB-C charging, and can be fully charged in five hours. It is available in three colors: black, denim and pink.

The $120 Fire HD 8 plus comes in gray and can be charged in three hours. It also sports wireless charging capabilities, a sharper camera, and a better processor than the Fire HD 8.

TNF averaged about 16 million viewers per game last year on Fox, and Amazon told advertisers to expect 12.5 million comparable viewers. Experts scoff at this and expect half the number, or even less.

“Last year they had an exclusive game, I think it was week 16, Cardinals, Niners. It was rumored to have made 4.8 million,” said Daniel Cohen, executive vice president of ‘Octagon, global media rights consultancy “I think with all the marketing that goes into it, they can get closer to six this year.”

“We want to make sure that we are and have always been available to as many fans where they are as frequently and as regularly as possible,” Miller said. “And in this case it’s a problem, obviously, that people are switching to streaming to digital, just like many years ago it was a problem to switch to a cable platform.”

Miller likened the shift to the seminal moment in 1987 when the NFL first aired games on ESPN, a momentous shift in the network’s era to cable. Granted, during those first few weeks, Miller added, the ratings were down, but in the long run, the move proved a resounding success.

Octagon’s Cohen partly agreed with Miller on the comparison, but said there was one crucial difference: ESPN was then and now a destination point for sports fans. Amazon Prime is not.

“The general Amazon Prime subscriber goes on, well, I can speak from recent experience, to buy Huggies,” said Cohen, who has a newborn daughter. “And, ‘Oh, by the way, maybe there’s a new movie or an NFL game.’ But there’s a lot less of them, from a consumer perspective there’s a lot less desire to connect to Amazon for the NFL It’s nice to be part of the ecosystem, whereas with ESPN the NFL was becoming essential to truly be a world leader in sports broadcasting.

The TNF Amazon deal is for 11 years, so the league certainly views the switch as a long-term proposition. And in the long run, the league may be right, but it’s ironic that the big day is coming after a week of plum ratings on traditional TV.

“Have you seen those ESPN numbers, for Monday Night Football? These are bananas. They are strong,” Crakes said. “And a lot of people were talking about, you know, ‘It’s kind of funny, streaming was so popular. Everybody wants to do it. Now I see everybody’s like, ‘Revenge of linear TV.’ dive into, you know, streaming. Linear TV means free-to-air and cable channels.

How will the NFL spin the lower numbers in the coming weeks, beyond saying the deal with Amazon is a long-term proposition? Cohen expects three talking points: long-term play, getting younger viewers, and what innovations Amazon should bring.

Production-wise, we don’t expect too many changes under the steady hand of executive producer Fred Gaudelli, who helmed NBC’s Sunday Night Football for years. There will be more cameras, an additional skycam, and even a new theme song.

The packaged coffee will offer both Robusta and Arabica blends from India’s major coffee growing regions like Karnataka, which accounts for 71% of India’s total coffee production.
