Amazon to Buy Medical for $3.9 Billion; The FTC is investigating http://amigaextreme.com/amazon-to-buy-medical-for-3-9-billion-the-ftc-is-investigating/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 23:27:24 +0000 http://amigaextreme.com/amazon-to-buy-medical-for-3-9-billion-the-ftc-is-investigating/

In July 2022, Amazon announced that it had entered into a “definitive merger” to acquire One Medical, a primary care organization. According to first press release When the company announced its acquisition plans, it described One Medical as a “national, human-centered, technology-driven primary care organization.” Also a doctor provided an update in August that it had signed a deal with Amazon, assuring its current customers that the deal wouldn’t change anything for them.

Other sites explained that One Medical operates like the “Netflix” of healthcare, offering a $199 annual subscription plan that gives members access to 125 in-person or virtual clinics across the country. Here’s more about the acquisition, what prompted it, and what could be next for Amazon-powered healthcare.

Amazon is getting into healthcare

Amazon has long sought a move into healthcare, and for good reason, as the healthcare market is valued at nearly $4 trillion. Amazon first attempted to enter the healthcare market by launching its own healthcare company, Amazon Care. Amazon officially announcement in August 2022 that it would drop plans to launch Amazon Care, which the company had planned to be a primary care model combining both telehealth and in-person services.

Despite the fact that Amazon Care had been in the works for three years and had already launched in all 50 states, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, Neil Lindsay, declared that Amazon Care would not be a long-term solution for its customers. The official closing date for Amazon Health through Amazon Care is December 31, 2022.

Now, it looks like Amazon has set its sights on One Medical instead, which already has a base established of 188 offices, 29 markets, more than 767,000 members and a relationship with 8,000 companies that offer the services to their employees. The company, while growing since its creation in 2007, has reported significant losses each year and said it has yet to make a profit, Amazon will also acquire One Medical’s debt as part of the deal.

In Amazon’s official press release, Lindsay and Amir Dan Rubin, CEO of One Medical CEO (who will also remain CEO once the acquisition is complete) said the deal is one that will “transform” healthcare.

“We believe healthcare is high on the list of experiences that need to be reinvented. Make an appointment, wait weeks or even months to be seen, miss work, go to the clinic, find a parking space, wait in the waiting room and then in the examination room for minutes that are too often in a hurry with a doctor and then take another trip to a pharmacy – we see many opportunities to both improve the quality of the experience and give people back valuable time in their days,” said Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services.

“The opportunity to transform healthcare and improve outcomes by combining One Medical’s human-centered, technology-driven model and exceptional team with Amazon’s customer obsession, the story invention and the willingness to invest for the long term is so exciting”, added Amir Dan Rubin, CEO of One Medical.

Why the FTC is interested in Amazon

On September 5, reports distributed that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating Amazon’s plans to buy One Medical, as well as their plans to buy iRobot, also a billion-plus deal. (And, just to keep the facts straight, these two deals would also happen after Amazon also bought MGM for $8.5 billion in March 2022.)

Apparently, Amazon plans to collect more consumer data from both offerings, such as home mapping through things like the Roomba vacuum cleaner and FTC chairwoman Lina Khan. was critical from Amazon in the past. Reportedly, the FTC will review both business acquisitions to see if they violate antitrust laws and whether the data acquired from Amazon will give the company unfair advantages in their respective markets.

The FTC isn’t alone in being skeptical of Amazon’s reach into many different markets, including healthcare. For example, Kate Bahn, chief economist at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth. asked why retailers are quickly becoming the source of healthcare in the United States, point out that so-called “one-stop shops” have in fact historically proven to increase costs and deny access to patients, especially those in rural areas. At the heart of these concerns is the fact that retailer-driven healthcare is primarily designed for profits, not patients, and will not actually improve many of the difficult challenges plaguing healthcare today. today.

And while healthcare certainly needs an overhaul in several areas, Bahn isn’t convinced that Amazon will be alone in doing so. “The acquisition of Amazon does not necessarily portend these negative effects of commodified and increasingly monopolized health care, but given general trends, there should be a much higher level of control,” he said. -she writes. “Policymakers and antitrust authorities need to pay close attention to the outcomes when a healthcare provider becomes a subsidiary of a business conglomerate already known for poor working conditions and dubious business tactics.”

Social media comments also expressed concerns about Amazon’s shift to healthcare. “This should not be allowed!!!” wrote Chet Morgan on Facebook. “It should be considered a monopoly, even if it’s not the same industry. That’s too much power for one man. This takes us away from our principles of freedom. The bigger these societies are, the less freedom we will have!!! We need to put an end to the hoarding of wealth like this. You have to set limits!!!”

What does this mean for nurses?

Amazon and OneMedical will have to provide more information to the FTC after its request, but if the agreement is formally reached, nurses could expect there to be many future opportunities to get involved with the company. owned by Amazon.

According to One Medical career, the company is looking to make big changes in healthcare: “Working to fix a broken healthcare system and changing people’s lives is incredibly rewarding work, and it’s made even better by the incredible culture of One Medical. There is no ego here. There are no stupid questions or stupid ideas. We learn from each other, we listen to each other and we collaborate to create a truly innovative and human-centered practice that people love. And on top of all that, we have fun doing it.

The page also states that One Medical benefits include:

  • Paid sabbatical leave for your 5th and 10th year
  • Health, vision and dental insurance paid
  • The PTO retirement program gives you cash for up to 40 accumulated PTO hours each year
  • Free One Medical memberships for you and three friends or family members
  • Pre-tax benefits for commuters
  • Maternity and paternity leave paid at 100% of your base salary
  • Child care credit

Of course, this official statement could change once Amazon takes over, but there are already plenty of open positions on the One Medical Career Clinicians page, specifically for Nurse Practitioners. So if you’re looking to get involved in Amazon’s first foray into healthcare, now might be the perfect time to do so.

Amazon’s live radio app ‘Amp’ gets creator fund – The Details http://amigaextreme.com/amazons-live-radio-app-amp-gets-creator-fund-the-details/ Mon, 19 Sep 2022 23:27:16 +0000 http://amigaextreme.com/amazons-live-radio-app-amp-gets-creator-fund-the-details/

Amazon’s live radio app “Amp” is creating a fund for creators. Here’s what we know about the program and who is eligible.

Amazon says the new program is designed to give Amp creators a way to get paid for the content they create. Eligible creators can earn money; no request necessary. Those who have already qualified should receive pending emails with details on how to redeem these rewards. So who is eligible to win with the Amp Creator Fund? Creators must meet the following requirements:

  • Host at least one live show each month.
  • Adhere to all of Amp’s Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and Music Guidelines.
  • Must be at least 18 years old to agree to Terms of Service; 13-18 must have parental consent.
  • Must be located in the United States.
  • Must have a US bank account.
  • Must have an email address associated with an Amazon account.
  • Cannot be an Amp employee or contract with Amp.

Amazon says it rewards eligible creators based on the performance of their shows. What goes into the calculation changes every month, but the shoes are “rated based on listener engagement and show performance metrics such as popularity with new and returning listeners.” As the creator fund program evolves, Amazon says these metrics may change over time.

One thing to note is that creators should be aware of their payment methods and emails. If a creator receives a reward from Amp and does not have accurate payment and tax information provided by the 15th of the month in which they qualified, the creator forfeits that reward.

“If you receive an email notifying you of your reward on July 8, you have until August 15 to upload your payment information. You are responsible for ensuring that your payment and tax information is up to date at all times. reads the Amp FAQ on the program.

Amp also offers creators a few social media kits to help promote their live radio shows. It will be interesting to see if this creation fund can help Amp progress against alternatives like Spotify Live, Clubhouse and even Twitter Spaces.

We buy Amazon Japan’s lowest rated perpetual motion machine http://amigaextreme.com/we-buy-amazon-japans-lowest-rated-perpetual-motion-machine/ Sat, 17 Sep 2022 07:15:15 +0000 http://amigaextreme.com/we-buy-amazon-japans-lowest-rated-perpetual-motion-machine/

Finally, the proof that perpetual disappointment is possible!

Our reporter Masanuki Sunakoma has purchased a lot of low-rated items on Amazon, and despite their often-justified bad reviews, he could normally find them on the bright side. Whether it’s a kitsch appeal like Santa’s toilet blanket or a sexy torso pillow, or potential for other uses like reselling little hats or training our patience on floating speakers, he has always managed to find the good side of these original products.

But some things don’t have a bright side…

Deep in the darkest corners of Amazon Japan lie products so vile, so worthless that even the world’s most powerful optimists can’t detect a redeeming quality. One of these products is the Physics Pendulum Perpetual Motion Toy Pendulum Ball Impact Ball Metal Stainless Steel Newton Stress Relief Indoor Desktop Type Physics Educational Craft [Rolls down from the top and returns to the top].

You may have spotted in this word salad of a name, that this product claims to have harnessed the elusive concept of perpetual motion in a stress relief toy that fits on top of your desk. It all sounded too good to be true, so Masanuki ignored the unanimous one-star customer ratings and paid. 2,155 yen (15 USD) for one.

A little later, an unmarked cardboard box arrived at our reporter’s door.

There were no instructions or documentation of any kind inside, just a bunch of junk.

We don’t mean that in an “oh, this smartphone is a piece of junk” way. It was literal junk in the sense of scrap pieces of rusted and scratched metal.

Since there were no instructions, Masanuki had to rely on pictures from the Amazon page to put it together.

This was made more difficult by the fact that there were an inordinate number of tiny nuts to fasten the parts together. It looks like they gave him some extra bonus ones, but since Masanuki wasn’t sure, they really only served to confuse him during assembly.

In the end, he had something that looked like the product in the pictures and a whole bunch of little nuts to spare. This toy works by dropping the balls into the hole in the black board. They then descend along the rails, which wind upwards and inwards like a large breaking wave. The rails are shaped so that the balls launch directly into the black board and start the process all over again and for eternity.

Sounds easy enough, but such a feat would also seem to require precision design and this item didn’t exactly scream “precision”. It may have had a lot to do with the Rusty Spheres that looked like a set of corrupted Dragon Balls.

Nevertheless, Masanuki decided to see what this thing could do and shoved a ball into the hole.

He descended with promising speed and trajectory…

Masanuki: “Oh.”

Only to stop dead at the bottom.

Masanuki: “…”

He wasn’t even close to performing the deft manipulation of physics he promised.

However, without any instruction, Masanuki couldn’t rule out the possibility that he had done something wrong. Maybe if he dropped a second ball, the kinetic energy of the collision would send the first ball all the way…

Masanuki: “…”

It would seem that the layers of rust and patina absorb a lot of the shock and also add friction to the path of the bullets. But maybe a third ball would help shake things up…

Masanuki: “…”

It still didn’t work, but the first ball got the dad moving a bit this time. Maybe a fourth ball would be enough to put him over…

Masanuki: “Oh come on!”

For some reason the fourth ball didn’t even stay on the rails and just flew off the floor with a loud disappointing noise. This toy wasn’t really as good at relieving stress as he was at creating it, and Masanuki picked up his rotting Dragon Ball off the floor and threw it in a nearby trash can.

In a vain last attempt to make this thing work, he tried a few more times and it looked like the ball would fly about 30% of the time. So even if he had the chance to pull a loop out of it, perpetual motion was completely out of the question.

He then returned to the Amazon reviews he had previously overlooked. “Trash”, “F*&% Trash”, “I wish I had read the reviews before buying” and “This year’s ‘#1 Don’t Buy’ item” pretty much have it all. said. We usually like to end these articles with “If you like to go for a swim in the office or wear Halloween masks in November, then check it out”, but not this time.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to buy this thing. It’s soulless.

Why the Patrick Mahomes-Justin Herbert showdown on Amazon will produce a paltry audience http://amigaextreme.com/why-the-patrick-mahomes-justin-herbert-showdown-on-amazon-will-produce-a-paltry-audience/ Thu, 15 Sep 2022 23:51:30 +0000 http://amigaextreme.com/why-the-patrick-mahomes-justin-herbert-showdown-on-amazon-will-produce-a-paltry-audience/

Follow our live Chiefs vs Chargers coverage.

The NFL again delivered stellar ratings in Week 1 with 20 million viewers tuning in to Monday Night Football alone on cable channel ESPN, and more than 121 million total over the first 16 games, the league sang.

And then there is tonight.

Look for spectators for Thursday Night Football, despite the attendance of marquee quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs and Justin Herbert of the Chargers, only to fall off a cliff. That’s because the NFL’s grand experiment of moving an entire game package to Thursday night streaming launches on Amazon Prime (Prime showed a preseason game; more on that below).

The NFL is well aware that the numbers will pale in comparison, but how much will they go down? And is the league ready for the inevitable social media stories of fans complaining that the game can’t be found and why it’s not on any network?

TNF averaged about 16 million viewers per game last year on Fox, and Amazon told advertisers to expect 12.5 million comparable viewers. Experts scoff at this and expect half the number, or even less.

“Last year they had an exclusive game, I think it was week 16, Cardinals, Niners. It was rumored to have made 4.8 million,” said Daniel Cohen, executive vice president of ‘Octagon, global media rights consultancy “I think with all the marketing that goes into it, they can get closer to six this year.”

Patrick Crakes, a former Fox Sports executive, projects a lower number. “Kind of hope for them that’s 8 million viewers. I think it will be five.

The rule of thumb among media analysts is that preseason games average 20% of a regular season game, Cohen said. There’s only one data point with Prime, and it’s not promising. The Aug. 25 exhibition between the Cardinals and 49ers drew 1 million viewers, but half of those watched on local television (in national markets for competing TNF teams, competitions may be shown on traditional television) .

What to make of Amazon’s ‘Thursday Night Football’ pre-season game rankings

Using 1 million, Cohen said, would project 5 million viewers for Thursday’s game. But there’s no precedent for an exclusively streamed pre-season game – again other than in domestic markets – so it’s unclear whether to trust the 20% metric. Based on streams alone, the number of viewers would be 2.5 million.

Amazon has marketed TNF on Prime for weeks, and the platform has an extensive reach with more than 200 million subscribers, according to the company. But even the NFL admitted that some of its fans might struggle to find the game.

“Our fans are going to have to find him. Their behaviors are going to change,” Jeff Miller, executive vice president of communications for the NFL, told reporters on Wednesday. While his words are hardly a news flash in an age where sports content is littered across an array of traditional and streaming platforms, making it harder for fans to find their games, it is nonetheless remarkable to hear it from the NFL, because the league for so long has emphasized the reach of network television.

It’s obvious why the league is doing this — yes, Amazon’s billion-dollar annual payout is essential, too. Young fans are cutting the cord and watching media on the go and on different devices, so the idea is to meet them on their terms.

“We want to make sure that we are and have always been available to as many fans where they are as frequently and as regularly as possible,” Miller said. “And in this case it’s a problem, obviously, that people are switching to streaming to digital, just like many years ago it was a problem to switch to a cable platform.”

Miller likened the shift to the seminal moment in 1987 when the NFL first aired games on ESPN, a momentous shift in the network’s era to cable. Granted, during those first few weeks, Miller added, the ratings were down, but in the long run, the move proved a resounding success.

Octagon’s Cohen partly agreed with Miller on the comparison, but said there was one crucial difference: ESPN was then and now a destination point for sports fans. Amazon Prime is not.

“The general Amazon Prime subscriber goes on, well, I can speak from recent experience, to buy Huggies,” said Cohen, who has a newborn daughter. “And, ‘Oh, by the way, maybe there’s a new movie or an NFL game.’ But there’s a lot less of them, from a consumer perspective there’s a lot less desire to connect to Amazon for the NFL It’s nice to be part of the ecosystem, whereas with ESPN the NFL was becoming essential to truly be a world leader in sports broadcasting.

The TNF Amazon deal is for 11 years, so the league certainly views the switch as a long-term proposition. And in the long run, the league may be right, but it’s ironic that the big day is coming after a week of plum ratings on traditional TV.

“Have you seen those ESPN numbers, for Monday Night Football? These are bananas. They are strong,” Crakes said. “And a lot of people were talking about, you know, ‘It’s kind of funny, streaming was so popular. Everybody wants to do it. Now I see everybody’s like, ‘Revenge of linear TV.’ dive into, you know, streaming. Linear TV means free-to-air and cable channels.

How will the NFL spin the lower numbers in the coming weeks, beyond saying the deal with Amazon is a long-term proposition? Cohen expects three talking points: long-term play, getting younger viewers, and what innovations Amazon should bring.

Production-wise, we don’t expect too many changes under the steady hand of executive producer Fred Gaudelli, who helmed NBC’s Sunday Night Football for years. There will be more cameras, an additional skycam, and even a new theme song.

‘Fans need to develop different muscle memory’: Will NFL viewers click on Amazon’s TNF?

Amazon doesn’t want to rock the boat too much and turn off traditional viewers. There will be alternate streams, one with the sporty and comedic feel Dude Perfect. But overall, aside from the platform, the production should feel familiar.

Cohen said he’s looking at two areas tonight: if there’s a technical issue, from buffering to outages that would trigger social media vitriol; and whether Amazon talent can create viral moments.

Amazon has invested heavily not only in game advertisers Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit, but also in colorful analysts like Ryan Fitzpatrick and Richard Sherman.

“What the hell is Richard Sherman, Ryan Fitzpatrick gonna say?” Cohen asked. “What is going to go viral? And what will be interesting? What will be Amazon’s response to the Manningcast, if you will, where every Tuesday morning or even Monday night trending on Twitter is something a guest or (something) Eli or Peyton said so how can they make this virality work?

Assassin’s Creed Mirage expected to launch on Amazon Luna, but not Google Stadia http://amigaextreme.com/assassins-creed-mirage-expected-to-launch-on-amazon-luna-but-not-google-stadia/ Mon, 12 Sep 2022 23:42:00 +0000 http://amigaextreme.com/assassins-creed-mirage-expected-to-launch-on-amazon-luna-but-not-google-stadia/

Ubisoft will release the latest Assassin’s Creed game on Amazon Luna, but not Google Stadia. The company plans to bring other highly anticipated games to the platform, including Skull & Bones, but Ubisoft recently confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be exclusive to Luna, at least as far as streaming services go. This naturally surprised many fans of the franchise given the sheer number of Assassin’s Creed games already on the platform.

The news comes from a recent report by Axios. “Next year’s Mirage will be coming to consoles, PCs and streaming, but only to Amazon Luna in terms of cloud services, Ubisoft confirms, despite some apparent announcements of a version for Google Stadia.”

“It’s a remarkable franchise to drop Stadia support,” notes the report in question. “The service’s first public beta in 2018 used one game, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and many Assassin’s Creed games have been released there since. Ubisoft is planning Stadia releases for the 2022 games Skull & Bones and Just Dance.

The report was quickly followed by a post on Twitter by well-known journalist Stephen Totilo, who recently returned from a trip to Paris, France, where he spoke with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot among several others. members of senior management.

“Assassin’s Creed Mirage will not be on Google Stadia,” Totilo remarked. “Just Amazon Luna in terms of streaming services, confirms Ubisoft.” The reporter called the move “an eye-catching omission considering Stadia ran an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey beta test and had tons of Assassin’s Creeds.”

The reasons for keeping Assassin’s Creed Mirage off the streaming service are unclear, but some have speculated the possibility of an exclusivity deal between Ubisoft and Amazon. What this means for Stadia in the future remains to be seen.
