Inside Betty White’s beloved Carmel Estate

Actress Betty White died last year at the age of 99 and left a stellar legacy in the entertainment world. The Emmy winner also owned some incredible real estate, including an oceanfront estate in Carmel, Calif., which surfaced on the market for $7,950,000.

The ‘Golden Girls’ star and her game show host husband Allen Luden, bought the prized property in 1978 for $170,000. They proceeded to build a custom home, which was completed in 1981. Sadly, Ludden died before the couple could enjoy the property together. White retained the coastal retreat for the rest of his life.

Let’s take a look inside his beloved estate in Carmel.

Magnificent gardens

Perched above the ocean, this property offers views of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, Ribera Beach, and Monastery Beach.

The quarter-acre grounds feature a storybook garden with lush flowers, manicured shrubbery, and a winding path. There is a back door and a path that leads to a sandy beach.

Continuity is essential here: the land has been maintained by the same gardener since the construction of the house.

Mid-Century Modern Details

Designed by architect Richard Hicks, the space features key tenets of mid-century modern design, including large open spaces, wood paneling, wood-beamed ceilings, and walls of windows. The three-story home measures 3,600 square feet and has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms.

The house’s understated design emphasizes its natural surroundings, notes the listing agent Nicole Truszkowskiwith Sotheby’s International Realty.

“It’s elegantly understated in terms of the house itself. It’s been designed to really draw your attention to nature and the ocean, wildlife and everything you see,” says Truszkowski. “I think it speaks to the owner of the house and the things she enjoyed. The house is a reflection of that.”

special shrine

While White spent the last years of his life at his Brentwood mansion in Los Angeles, this coastal getaway provided him with a place to “recharge and recharge,” says Truszkowski.

“Spending time in Carmel was one of Betty’s favorite activities. She had many precious moments with her family and close friends. The house embodies the spirit of Betty and Allen,” she adds.

We particularly love the master bedroom with its ocean view, fireplace and ensuite bathroom.

Right price?

Real estate prices in this elite enclave have catapulted since White landed this property for $170,000 in the 1970s. According to data from Realtor.com®, the median home price is currently $2,195,000 and only 117 homes are available for sale.

The rarity of a beachfront abode to come on the market for the first time in over 40 years adds to its appeal. The trustee will review the offers on April 4, and if you want to make an offer from the comfort of your home office, think again.

“You have to physically visit the property to submit an offer,” says Truszkowski. “If you really want to buy the property, jump on a plane, come see it.”

She’s confident potential buyers will be impressed with the place once they set foot on the grounds, and not just because of its connection to the legendary actress.

“There’s interest just because of that,” Truszkowski concedes. “But the property itself is really, really special. It’s super spectacular.”

Truszkowski and Zak Freeman along with Truszkowski, Freedman & Associates of Sotheby’s International Realty–Carmel Brokerage hold the listing.
