TOKYO and CINCINNATI, August 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Underlining his global pledge to reduce his carbon emissions to zero by 2040, Kao signed The Climate Pledge, a pledge co-founded by online retailer Amazon and environmental advocacy group Global Optimism.
As a signatory to The Climate Pledge, Kao is committed to regularly measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions, implementing decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement, and taking action to neutralize the remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent and socially responsible emissions. Beneficial offsets to achieve annual net zero carbon emissions by 2040 – 10 years before the Paris Agreement on climate change. Kao has already set new goals to achieve a decarbonized society in 2021 and aims to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) to net zero emissions by 2040 and become a carbon negative company by 2050.
Sustainability is central to Kao’s corporate philosophy and ESG strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan. The Japanese word “kirei” describes something that is clean, tidy, and beautiful all at once. Implemented in 2019, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan includes three main pillars, namely “making my daily life more beautiful”, “making thoughtful choices for society” and “making the world healthier and cleaner”. These pillars include 19 key leadership actions, which include decarbonization and the development of clean and environmentally friendly products.

To achieve its global goal of reducing its carbon emissions to net zero by 2040, Kao is accelerating its carbon reduction trajectory by switching to non-fossil fuels, implementing measures to further reduce the environmental impact of its products throughout their life cycle, and the proactive introduction of innovative technologies. As part of these measures, Kao installed the largest photovoltaic power generation facilities for on-site power generation at its Sakata plant in 2021. Since last year, the company has also been able to further reduce its scope 1+2 emissions and increase the use of renewable energy, achieve 100% renewable energy at all 55 logistics sites in Japanthe Sumida complex (including the Tokyo factory) and the Sakata factory.
In the Americas region, all factories and offices owned by Kao Consumer Products have been supporting 100% renewable electricity since 2019. In addition, energy saving measures have been implemented, resulting in a 14% reduction in consumption energy since 2010. In the United States and Austria, Kao generates her own solar energy, which she aims to develop at every opportunity.
