Now’s the best time to get Apple’s AirPods Max – here’s why

The AirPods Max has always piqued my curiosity. Ever since Apple unveiled its premium wireless headphones in a surprisingly low-key press announcement in 2020, I’ve been wowed by their seamless integration with iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks, and I could only imagine what their 40mm custom dynamic drivers could do for my favorite tracks. . Oh, and that beautifully crafted stainless steel design that screams comfort? *bosses kiss*

But then, like many of us, I looked at the $549/£549 price tag. “Oof” was my exact initial expression. Do you know what you can buy with that kind of money and still is there a little left? A PS5 for $499 / £479. So that’s exactly what I did. But the AirPods Max quietly whispered “I’m worth it” in the back of my mind, and I hardly doubted Apple at all. Custom spatial audio to its stellar active noise cancellation (ANC) would impress.

Luckily, I received a review sample of Apple’s AirPods Max earlier this year (and luckily they came in the sumptuous Space Gray color option I’d been eyeing). After months of re-listening to my favorite playlists, testing them in different scenarios, and watching all kinds of shows with the volume turned up, I can say that these premium cans have satisfied my internal hype.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows (looking at you, Smart Case), but these are a great pair of over-ear headphones. Well, they should be for the price. You don’t need me to tell you if they’re worth it – that’s what our AirPods Max review is for. But with black friday 2022 already starting with a packet of shinies Black Friday headphones dealsI’m convinced now is the best time to grab the AirPods Max.

AirPods Max 2 rumors are rare

One of the biggest dilemmas that continues to plague the tech world is “should I wait for the upgrade?” Not so long ago, I asked this question as I waited impatiently for Apple to finally release the Airpods Pro 2but I gave in and got the AirPods Pro anyway – and it was a good decision.

Inevitably, the AirPods Max will receive a second generation update. Nothing is concrete, but there are already rumors about the AirPods Max 2. Many thought they would be announced in 2022, and often reliable Apple tracker Marc Gurman fanned the fire by claiming that we should be “looking for an AirPods Max refresh with new colors” this year.

However, after the big iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro reveal, along with the AirPods Pro 2, there was no mention of the AirPods Max 2. Also, it looks like Apple has wrapped up its product launches this year, with the next set of devices, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Proshould arrive early next year.

It doesn’t surprise me, as there are hardly any juicy rumors or leaks of a pair of premium next-gen Apple headphones. The closest are some patents of Apple obviouslysuggesting that the new AirPods Max could come with touchscreen gesture controls and a revamped smart case (hallelujah!).

We already have an idea of what the rumored AirPods Max 2 could bring to the table thanks to the AirPods Pro 2. This includes an improved H2 chip, improved ANC, Conversation Boost, and longer battery life. We’d like to hope that the Cupertino-based tech giant will also include lossless audio support.

Case and point: It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting next-gen AirPods Max anytime soon. Plus, there’s no point in waiting for a new pair to arrive if you’ve been put off by the unfavorably high price of the original, as they’re likely to be similar. AirPods Max are ready to be taken, above all with a discount.

AirPods Max are getting great discounts

December will mark two years since the AirPods Max made their triumphant debut in 2020, and that means one thing for a host of Apple devices: price drops. Now that we’re into Black Friday season, I’ll bet my savings that Apple’s premium cans will fall way below their $549 sticker.

Alright, I’m only placing this bet because we’ve already seen this price drop to $449 on Amazon (opens in a new tab). That’s $100 you can keep in your pocket, and that’s a price that seems a lot more appropriate. But Apple’s premium AirPods are known to get even bigger price cuts, dropping to $429 earlier this year and even until a affordable £342 using an Amazon loophole.

With each passing year, the AirPods Max will no doubt get cheaper, but the best time to pick up a pair will always be around major sales events – and there’s none bigger than Black Friday. (Don’t expect discounts on the $1,080 AirPods Max case by Gucci.)

AirPods Max are versatile – in a way

Over the past six months, I’ve been amazed by the high-fidelity audio quality and sublime comfort that the AirPods Max provide. The ear pads wrapped in the custom mesh textile are plush to the touch, and thanks to the knitted mesh along the head strap, the headphones can sit comfortably on my head for hours. And I mean this; Apple wasn’t lying about its 20-hour battery life.

When I first took them out of the box, I treated the AirPods Max like the premium pair of headphones they are. Use them exclusively indoors for playing music while working, putting them in the Smart Case (cruddy) when not in use, and even hanging them on a Satechi 2-in-1 Helmet Stand designed to charge (and show off) AirPods Max. I mean, who wants scratches on a device that costs that much?

Eventually, however, I wanted to see what else I could use the AirPods Max for. Namely, the workouts. Not just those intensive indoor HIIT workouts from Apple Fitness+; Tried them on three mile runs outdoors. I can already hear people shouting “but they don’t have an IP rating!” I know, I was playing a risky game.

But I wanted to hear the thumping beats with ANC on while running the last mile of my runs. The results? They are a real pleasure to wear. Not only could I freely control the volume and tunes I wanted to hear using the handy digital crown, but they stayed firmly on my head despite the constant movement. Now, would I recommend using them for workouts? No. To put it bluntly, fabric and perspiration don’t mix, and regular cleaning of the ear pads isn’t ideal. The thing is, though, if you want to use them as workout headphones, you can.

Sweat aside, I’ve also used the AirPods Max as my go-to headphones on my travels. My only complaint comes down to that dastardly Smart Case, which offers next to no protection, and no one will want to carry it around like a handbag. Instead, I stored them in my laptop bagand I love whipping them on long train rides to drown out the sound of a busy carriage.

Speaking of which, I can attest that the ANC on the AirPods Max is nasty. Some of my trips abroad have forced me to sleep in the same room as the snorers, so I usually don’t sleep at all. Not with those cans on your head, though. While not completely eliminating every grunt and snort, it could still gradually eliminate the volume of a snore, which meant I could actually close my eyes.

The AirPods Max are, without a doubt, a premium pair of headphones, and any iPhone, iPad, and Mac user would love to have them. However, that price is a complete turn-off, and I wouldn’t recommend buying them at full price. The good news is that you don’t have to, because black friday 2022 is the time to see that price drop to something more manageable.
