To stop bots, Amazon is creating an ‘invite-only’ system for PlayStation 5 sales

To prevent bots from grabbing all the supplies, Amazon is adopting an invite system for future Sony PlayStation 5 sales.

On Thursday, the company launched the invitation-only program(Opens in a new window) for the PS5 Disc Edition, which continues to sell out in seconds at major retailers. “The goal of this program is to help prevent stock-outs and price gouging caused by bot traffic,” an Amazon spokesperson told us. “There is no cost to customers and no membership is required.”

The company’s product listing for the PS5 Disc Edition now displays a “Request an Invite” button instead of the normal “Add to Cart” option. Amazon plans to review all users who have requested an invite and weed out those suspected of being bots. This will include reviewing the account’s previous purchase history and when the account was created, according(Opens in a new window) at TechCrunch.

Approved buyers will receive an email with a link valid for 72 hours. Amazon’s product listing for the PS5 will also display a countdown timer on your window to purchase the console.

Hopefully the new system will make buying a PS5 on Amazon easier. Like other retailers, the company regularly restocks the console. However, it’s still incredibly difficult to buy one on due to continued high demand from consumers and resellers alike, who purchase PS5 supplies using computer-aided robot programs.

Amazon’s website says it created the invite system “to ensure that as many genuine customers as possible can purchase this high-demand item.” Only one invitation can be requested per article.

If you do not receive an invitation immediately, Amazon said(Opens in a new window) “your request will be considered for selection when additional stock becomes available.”

“The number of invitations to purchase will be based on the number of items in stock. This is an ongoing program, so we will issue invitations to purchase as we have more units in stock,” the company added.

According to TechCrunch, Amazon also plans to implement the invite system for Sales(Opens in a new window) of the Xbox Series X in the coming days.
