Amazon on Tuesday added WRAL to its offering of local news stations available in its News app for Fire TV devices, allowing users to watch clips of recent WRAL newsletters and other digital exclusive videos.

The addition comes as Amazon significantly increased its investment in the local news space, adding more than 130 stations to its free, ad-supported news app on Tuesday.

Amazon began rolling out local news coverage on its News app for Fire TV in December 2020, providing local news coverage in 12 major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami. In March, Amazon added 88 more cities to its local media coverage, and Tuesday’s extension covers 159 cities across the United States from 259 local stations.

The News app comes preinstalled on Amazon Fire TV devices and allows users to personalize their experience by setting their preferred national news sources including Bloomberg, HuffPost, Yahoo, Cheddar, and Entertainment Weekly, as well as local news stations. .

Adding WRAL as a “favorite” channel is as easy as opening the News app and selecting WRAL as your preferred news source. When you first open the app, it detects the nearest metropolitan area and provides a list of information sources available in the area. If you want or need to change your news preferences, just select “Preferences” from the app menu, then “Channels”.

Up to two preferred local information sources can be defined at a time.

Once the preferences are saved, you can use the Alexa voice remote included in the device to say “Alexa, listen to the news,” which automatically cycles through and plays a personalized news playlist.
